What types of Stringing Machines are there?

There are 3 different types of Stringing Machine tensioning systems available on the market – these being: Drop Weight, Manual (Crank/Spring) and Electronic – each machine has its pros and cons.

A Drop Weight & Electronic stringing machine is known as a Constant pull tensioning system and a Manual Machine is referred to as a lockout machine.

What are the differences between the Stringing Machines?

Drop Weight

Drop Weight Stringing Machines have a long Rod (Tension bar) with a mounted weight. The further the weight is up the tension bar the more the string will be tensioned. Generally the desired weight can be adjusted with a guide which will be displayed on the tension bar. The correct tension is achieved when the bar if parallel to the ground.

Advantages:

– Drop Weight Stringing Machines are the cheapest out of the machines

– They can be easily transported (ideal for tournament players/stringers)

Disadvantages:

– Drop weight stringing machines can be a little inaccurate – as you need to make sure that the tensioning bar is completely parallel to the groun.

– Most Drop weight stringing machines are table top machines – which means it has no stand – however you if you decide to purchase a drop weight machine a universal stand can be purchased.

Manual

Manual Stringing Machines are basically a more accurate Drop Weight machine. The principle is the same, the tension is set by a screw/knob – and you turn a Crank until the pointer/brake indicates that the correct tension has been achieved.

Advantages:

– Manual Stringing machines are more accurate as they tend to have a brake that stops the system when the tension has been achieved

– Some Manual Machines are easy to transport as you can get them both tabletop and with a stand

– Stringing time is generally a little quicker

Disadvantages:

The string job loses tension at a fast rate compared to rackets that are being strung on a Drop weight or Electronic Machine this is due to the Lockout tensioning system.

Electronic

The tension is generally set by using an Electronic LCD display screen which is linked directly with the motor which will give you the most accurate tension and also quickest result. There are two different types of tensioning systems when it comes to Electronic Stringing Machines these being: Constant Pull & Lockout.

The constant pull machines will constantly pull the desired tension and will do so until it has been achieved. The Lockout system is the same as that in the Manual Stringing Machines – the tension is locked out when it has been achieved and will pull no further – this meaning, less accuracy as it does not allow for tension loss when the racket is mounted on the machine.

Advantages:

– They are the most accurate Stringing Machine machines

– They do all the work for you – tensioning is set electronically by pressing a button on the side of the machine

– They are the most professional looking machines (generally used in Shops)

Disadvantages:

Need access to electricity.

They are the most expensive type of stringing machine.
