Is Nick Kyrgios Good for Tennis?
Twenty year old Australian Nick Kyrgios burst onto the tennis scene at Wimbledon last year, making it to the quarterfinal stage before losing out to Milos Raonic. Kyrgios’ four set win over the second seeded Spaniard Rafael Nadal catapulted him into the headlines and ever since his career has continued to grow, with him having been as high as 25 in the world rankings in June 2015.
Despite Kyrgios’ rise to be one of the top 50 men’s tennis players in the world, it has been for other reasons that he has caught the media’s attention. In recent times Kyrgios’ action on the court has been overshadowed by his behaviour. Following various encounters with umpires and the press, most recently Kyrgios has been at the front of the tennis headlines for sledging opponent Stan Wawrinka about his sex life under his breath whilst on court. Kyrgios was fined for his unquestionably unacceptable actions, but is he good for tennis?
In recent years tennis has not seen anyone like Kyrgios’- a controversial and exciting player who embraces his reputation as a ‘bad boy’.
Tennis needs a villain or a showman to light up the game and give it publicity. Kyrgios could be the man to do this. He certainly has the potential to get people talking about tennis. But first, in order to be good for tennis, he must become one of the greats at tennis. He will also, at times, have to learn to control exactly what he voices, whatever he may think.
